What was the highlight of Hotel Boutique Alta Las Palomas

Curious design

Reception was friendly and the room was large, with a nice balcony and view over part of the city to the distant mountains. The hotel is full of curious nooks, crannies, and design features, with a beautiful pool area.

The room and bathroom were laid out in very strange fashion, as if the hotel had been retrofit into an older building. We were surprised to learn this was an architect-designed hotel given the inconvenient layout of our room. Our sheets were stained and there was soap left in the shower dish from previous guests. There were cobwebs covering the restaurant chandeliers and the food didn't live up to its advertising hype. We noted at check in that we had to leave early and established a time for the next morning, but still there was no one at reception to help us check out. We had to figure out how to unlock the main entrance door and then get the parking lot gate to work so we could get out. We wouldn't judge this place so harshly if it didn't make such overblown claims about itself. Our stay was fine, but the hotel didn't live up to its claims.

Gorgeous hotel. Didn’t realise it was part of the small leading hotels of the world group. Staff were fantastic, breakfasts delicious and made freshly for you.

Beautiful hotel, great staff & location

I was upgraded to a suite and read the reviews about requesting one of these on a higher floor ( I was on the 4th floor). An uninterrupted view of parts of the city and the mountains, awoken to birds singing in the morning - it was amazing. The suites at this hotel are really well appointed, large living room when you enter leading to the balcony. Off to the left, arched doors lead to a large bedroom with views of the balcony, city and mountains. Large walk in shower, large storage and dressing area. The only thing I could slightly fault was the AC in the bathroom wasn't very strong. It was 80+F when I was there and the bathroom was always way hotter than the other rooms (even when i wasn't using the shower). Aside from that I LOVED the layout and facilities of the suite. Breakfast was included and no complaints -pretty standard, well made. I had dinner at the hotel twice and again, tasty food, good quality- no complaints. The restaurant itself is very beautiful, there are long planters lining the inside of the large windows, running the full length of the restaurant (overlooking the pool area) and another set separating it from the bar, a nice added touch. The one thing that was an issue was wasps/ hornets- on my last day I sat near the door by one of the planters and there was a mini hornets nest inside in one of the corners above the planter. As I'm allergic to stings I had to quickly move and pointed it out to the restaurant staff. The hotel decor in the main areas is really beautiful, you feel like you are walking down a little indoor street with huge wooden chests, structured "fairy" light decorations, high-back throne like chairs beautifully decor'ed, long sofas, huge floor to ceiling curtains . At one end it opens into the restaurant and the other end is the entrance. Aside from the beauty of the hotel, the staff are so friendly and kind, they stop and chat, they're efficient, nothing is too much.

Address the mini hornets nest in one of the corners above the planter by the door! For someone allergic to stings that was a little alarming.

Nice hotel and architecture, great view from the balcony

I liked the location up the hill with an amazing view of San Jose and some of the best sunsets I have seen. It was a bit isolated for someone without a car but I was wanting a few days’ time out so it suited me.

Unfortunately my stay was marred by getting a stomach bug after 2.5 weeks in Costa Rica with no problems at all. Also, it could be noisy when there were late arrivals or early departures as the sound echoing from the corridors made it sound like they were in your room!

Exquisite hotel with wonderful staff-avoid the restaurant.

The hotel and the staff were fabulous! Beautiful and spacious room with lovely views and amazing architecture. The staff in the restaurant were professional and lovely.

The food was dreadful and overpriced. My fish was so over cooked that I couldn’t chew it- it was burned on one side and like rubber. The pumpkin soup had zero flavor despite expecting lemongrass and ginger (for a $12 small bowl of soup) every dish needed salt to bring out even the slightest flavor. The portions were extremely small for the price. For those prices we were expecting an amazing dinner. Further, the menu was meat heavy with very few choices for alternative diets such as gluten free and vegan.

Lovely stay in a beautiful location with local flavor and character.

The breakfast was a full breakfast. Served very hot with coffee and fresh watermelon juice. The views from the dining room are also lovely. The server was so friendly. My room is super clean, peaceful and the balcony has a huge overhang so I can leave the screen doors open even when it's raining.

The entry drive is a little curvy and hard to navigate if you are driving yourself. Other than that, can't think of a thing. It was wonderful!

Expensive, spent most of the time in my friends home.

Staff was wonderful Food was delicious

Overpriced. No breakfast included with the large suite, hence more expensive because of inconvenient location. Nothing nearby. Had to use room service, even for coffee. No coffee in the room, must carry up yourself. Not convenient for disabled people. Elevator not convenient for disabled people. Booking.com not clear when making confirmation, regarding available rooms. Paid double the price offered online, by making me upgrade because I asked a question about staying on a higher floor than ground floor, and whether or not there was an elevator. Hotel empty due to rainy season, often, no one else in restaurant even though they could not accommodate my room choice. No good communication with booking.com. Sadly, they actually confirmed my first reservation for half the price, than the switch. $327/ night is a lot for Costa Rica, ask anyone living there, Especially considering how remote it is. The only water in my room was $7 a bottle. Tourist rip off... Need cab to even get to a store...inconvenient location. I am UNHAPPY with booking.com, not the hotel. Now I know how isolated this location is. Poor communication.

Great hotel. Free car park on site. Check in was easy and efficient, the room was spacious with a huge bathroom, clean with a beautiful sunset view from the balcony. The restaurant is lovely, we enjoyed an early breakfast which was delicious.

The ONLY Hotel to stay at in San Jose!!

The suite and balcony were gorgeous. We also loved the living room area. The only thing we did not like was the setup of the bathroom- very tight and congested, especially for two people trying to get dressed for dinner. Could use some updating, especially the plumbing- bidet barely worked, toilet ran nonstop, etc. The restaurant was FABULOUS! As well as the waiters. They were extremely friendly, suggested amazing entrees for our group of four. We will forever highly suggest the Alta to our friends who travel to SJO! We were recommended by the owner of our previous hotel we stayed at the prior week, at the Golden Pineapple Villas in Uvita, CR.

Love this place!

Fabulous small hotel that is tucked away on a hill on the outskirts of San Jose. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Beautiful rooms with patios overlooking the city and big bathrooms. We didn't hear any of our neighbors and the hotel is situated in a quiet and nice area. Grounds are well maintained. We would come back in a heartbeat!

View from restaurant, that’s it.

Everything else was a night mare, not to mention the balancines dinner and it’s staff. They promised me a free dinner for 2 in future, told me they will email my confirmation for the dinner the check out day,, is been 3 days, I have not gotten a confirmation. I would not reconnect that hotel to any of my friends.
